Riftbound Rules Explained — Every Mechanic, In One Place
Riftbound's rules questions cluster around a handful of things: the newer keywords, what the odd collector numbers mean, how decks are legally built, and what's currently banned. This page is the index — each section links to the full guide rather than repeating it here.
On sourcing: we only publish rules explanations where we can point at Riot's own rules text or official reveal coverage. Where a keyword is printed on cards but hasn't been documented officially in a form we can cite, we list the name without inventing what it does. That's why this hub covers some keywords in depth and simply names others.
The Vendetta keywords
Vendetta introduced three mechanics, and they generate the bulk of current rules searches:
- Empower explained — upgrading a card that's already in play by paying an extra cost later. Also see the worked example in Jayce & Mel: Empower in practice.
- Flow explained — playing cards straight from your trash, turning discarded cards into a second pool of plays.
- Burn explained — sending cards to the trash, either your own to fuel Flow-style payoffs, or an opponent's as a deck attack.
All three together, with how they interact: Vendetta's new mechanics.
New card concepts
- Unit-Gear and Decrees — two card concepts Vendetta introduced.
- Overnumbers explained — what a collector number beyond the set total means, and how signed and Overnumbered prints differ.
- Understanding card rarity — the rarity tiers, and where Showcase and alt-art printings sit.
Deckbuilding rules
- How a Riftbound deck is built — deck construction, Legends, and how the pieces fit together.
- Building for Vendetta — deckbuilding with the new set's cards and domain pairings.
- Vendetta synergies with existing cards — how new cards interact with earlier sets.
What's currently legal
- The banlist explained — how bans work and what they mean for your decks.
- The July 2026 ban list update — the most recent changes.
Bans and errata move prices as well as decks — why Riftbound prices change covers that side.
Event formats
- Pre-Rift rules explained — how Riftbound's launch-event format works.

Riftbound rules FAQ
What is Empower in Riftbound? Empower gives a card the potential to gain new abilities once it's already in play, usually by paying an extra cost on a later turn — a cheap play now, a bigger payoff later. Full detail in the Empower guide.
What is Flow in Riftbound? Flow is a Vendetta keyword that lets you play a card straight from your trash instead of your hand, so discarded and used cards become a second pool of plays rather than being gone for good.
What is Burn in Riftbound? Burn sends cards from a Main Deck to the trash — either your own, to fuel Flow and other trash payoffs, or your opponent's as a deck attack.
What does Overnumbered mean on a Riftbound card? It's a collector number that runs past the set's stated total — for example a number higher than the set size — marking a chase printing that sits outside the main numbered run. The Overnumbers guide covers how these differ from signed prints.
Where can I find Riftbound's current banned cards? The banlist guide explains how bans work, and the July 2026 update covers the most recent changes.
